The Ladderback Chair

This particular client is a lover of Charles Rennie MacKintosh (CRM) and our brief was to create a chair as a surprise wedding present for her husband-to-be which had all the hallmarks of CRM. A fascinating project with interesting ‘twists’ – for instance instead of the ‘ladderback’ being completely straight we ‘curved’ the back splats and positioned the splats on the extra deep back legs to provide some lumbar support. CRM would have used ebonised oak but we used brown oak to lighten the piece a little. We also found a wood carver to incise a special message from our client to her husband down the outside of the back leg. As this was a local commission we delivered it to the marquee whilst the couple were in Church so that it could be at his place for the Wedding Breakfast.
